A rashguard can pass every fit check in the changing room — snug torso, flat collar, sleeves that track your arm — and still feel like a different, looser garment twenty minutes into a hard round. That’s not in your head, and it’s not the fabric wearing out mid-class. It’s a real, physical variable that a dry mirror check can’t capture: what the fabric does once it’s saturated. Why Wet Fabric Behaves Differently

A rashguard that feels perfectly snug at the start of class can loosen noticeably once it’s carrying its own weight in sweat, because moisture reduces the friction between the fabric and your skin and lets the whole garment slide more freely. Dry compression fabric grips your skin partly through friction, not just elastic tension. Soak that same fabric and the friction component drops — the elastane is still pulling, but there’s less resistance holding the shirt in the exact spot it started, so hems creep, collars gap, and sleeves migrate faster than they would in a dry drill.

Why the Pinch Test Matters More Than People Realize

This is exactly why a rashguard should feel snug — genuinely snug, not just comfortable — when it’s bone dry. You want a fit with margin built in, because it’s going to relax slightly once you’re soaked, and that relaxed state still needs to be secure rather than sloppy. A rashguard that already feels like a normal t-shirt when dry has nowhere to go but loose once the sweat starts. Pinch the fabric at your chest and back before you ever step on the mat: if you can gather more than a sliver of material dry, you will not like what it does wet.

Fabric quality is what governs how far a rashguard actually drifts once it’s wet. Higher-end blends carry a meaningful percentage of spandex or elastane, and that elastic content is what keeps pulling the shirt back toward your body even when friction has dropped. Bargain rashguards with minimal stretch content are the ones that turn into wet sails by round three — the compression was doing most of the work through friction and tight cut alone, and once that’s gone, so is the fit. Check the fabric composition on the tag and favor anything with a real elastane percentage over a shirt that’s nearly all polyester.

What You Can’t Test in a Fitting Room — and What You Can Predict

You can’t fully simulate a soaked rashguard in a dressing room mirror, but you can predict how badly it will drift. A fabric heavy on polyester with a low double-digit spandex count is a red flag for wet-fit slide. A fabric that lists 15–20% elastane or higher is built to keep tension even when it’s carrying moisture. If a listing doesn’t state the blend at all, treat that silence the same way you’d treat a missing fabric-weight number — as a sign the composition probably isn’t something the brand wants to highlight.

The practical habit: judge any new rashguard’s dry fit on the tight side, not the comfortable side. If it’s merely “fine” standing still in the store, it will be loose by the second round once sweat hits it. If it’s snug enough that you notice it dry, that’s the fit that survives forty minutes of a hard roll.
